Manufacturing and Testing of textured Grinding Tools

Grinding is one of the most critical manufacturing processes, serving as the final step for finishing and improving surface quality. Due to the high-precision nature of the grinding process, various issues arise, primarily caused by high heat generation, including surface burn, high residual stresses, and microstructural changes. One practical solution worth considering involves textured grinding tools. The available grooves on the grinding tool reduce the contact area, thereby reducing heat generation. The textured grinding tools are manufactured by several methods in this project which are laser ablation of available tools, and brazing CBN grits on the known substrate with both laser and furnace concerning the achieved optimized pattern according to the simulations and process modeling.

In this specific project, textured CBN tools will be manufactured using two different methods: the furnace and laser will serve as heat sources for the brazing process. Afterwards, the performance of the tools will be evaluated based on parameters such as force, temperature, and surface roughness. Furthermore, the wear of the abrasive particles will be monitored, and the parameters most effective for minimizing wear will be determined.
