Lithium-ion batteries are currently the most commonly used rechargeable energy storage devices due to their high energy density and specific energy capacity compare to other commercial battery technologies. However, even the best battery systems available provide insufficient energy density and durability for high-demand applications like electric/hybrid vehicles. Therefore, the new electrode materials, which will provide higher energy capacity and power density as well as long cycle life, are in need. In this project, metal nanoparticle decorated carbon nanofiber/carbon nanotube nanocomposites will be designed and fabricated. Then, their electrochemical performance in a lithium- and sodium-ion cells will be investigated.
