Students will be involved in using CRISPR-cas9 to knockdown a neurotransmitter receptor in the bee brain to determine if it plays a role in appetite regulation. This CRISPR-cas9 system will be validated in an in vitro system using the honey bee cell line.
Another project will involve determining effective treatments for the honey bee fungal pathogen Nosema ceranae using a newly developed drug. Nosema is distributed worldwide and is a major factor in the most recent decline in global bee health.
These projects will require working with live bees and performing beekeeping duties. No prior experience is expected.
