Opposition Alliance in Electoral Authoritarian Regimes

In electoral authoritarian regimes, opposition parties face an uneven playing field while running against the ruling party. However, the opposition's performance in the 2019 local elections in Turkey has demonstrated the importance of electoral alliances in achieving success under an electoral authoritarian regime. The aim of this research is to understand the factors that lead to effective opposition coordination/alliance under electoral authoritarian regimes around the globe. The first phase of the research is based on coding the dependent variable/outcome variable of the study which is presence/absence of electoral coalition in all parliamentary and/or executive and local elections. Students will then gather more specific data from those cases where the opposition parties established an electoral alliance.
