Exploring the role of working memory in guiding attention

Term:
2025-2026 Fall
Faculty Department of Project Supervisor:
Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences
Number of Students:
2

Description:
This project investigates how memory guides our external attention. What we hold in mind strongly influences what we attend to in the outside world. Yet, past research has debated the underlying mechanisms that determine which memory representations shape attention. When multiple items are stored in memory, which one will bias our attention?
This study aims to disentangle the mechanisms behind this phenomenon by focusing on two key candidates: internal attention and memory precision. Through a carefully designed behavioral experiment, we will dissociate their effects to determine which mechanism plays the primary role in memory-guided attention.

Commitment

  • ~6 hours/week total, including:
    • Data collection (conducting and participating in experiments)
    • Reading assigned papers
